National Championship Day Two: BC clinches championship appearance

Jasmine McKnight

Team Nova Scotia and Team Quebec were first to take the floor on Saturday morning.

Just like their first match, Ethan Wolfe was first on the board, giving Nova Scotia the opening lead in only the 16th second of play.

Quebec managed to even things up before the buzzer signalled the end of the first period. The next goal came early in the second period as Alexander Field was perfect in his penalty shot opportunity.

Again, Quebec evened up the score, but Nova Scotia took control during the second and carried a one goal through the end of the game to take it 5-4.

FINAL: Nova Scotia 5, Quebec 4

The two winning teams from day one faced off next.

B.C. logged a goal two minutes into the opening period but didn’t score again until late into the third.

The real highlight was Team B.C.’s goaltender, Roman Mironovic, who logged the first shutout of the tournament, stopping all 21 shots against him.

Ontario was unable to get past Mironovic, and ultimately fell 2-0.

FINAL: B.C. 2, Ontario 0
B.C. MVP: Roman Mironovic
Ontario MVP: Justin Laquerre

B.C. had one last opponent in their way of a perfect pool play record, Team Quebec.

Alexandre Dupont only needed 50 seconds to score and give Quebec the 1-0 edge. Nearing the end of the opening period, B.C.’s Radim Bulhart logged a powerplay goal to tie things up.

To start the second, Quebec found two goals. B.C. refused to let the game get away from them. The squad from out west made it 3-3 before claiming the lead with a Bulhart shorthanded goal.

To finish the game, Stros added one last goal to secure the 5-3 victory and ensure their appearance in the National Championship final.

FINAL: B.C. 5, Quebec 3
B.C. MVP: Radim Bulhart
Quebec MVP: Alexandre Dupont

With one spot remaining in the championship game, Team Ontario and Team Nova Scotia were set to battle it out in hopes of gaining an opportunity to hoist the championship banner.

As usual, Wolfe went to work quickly taking 32 quick seconds to score for Nova Scotia.

Despite the quick goal, Nova Scotia conceded a pair of goals to give up the lead.

The second period went almost entirely in Team Nova Scotia’s favour as they reclaimed the lead and built it up to 4-3.

Team Ontario still had a whole period left to work with. With pressure on Ontario to score, Evan Peirce was the one to tie things up for the Ontario squad.

Andrew Lin followed up and Ontario had a 5-4 lead with only 45 seconds on the clock. Kaelen Bakker managed to find the net in that short time, but a tie went in favour of the Ontario team.

Ontario clinched their spot in the championship with the tie and were set for a rematch with B.C.

Final: Ontario 5, Nova Scotia 5
Ontario MVP: Matt Kostuch
Nova Scotia MVP: Riley Curry

The Nova Scotia women put much more pressure on the Ontario squad than in their first meeting of the series.

This pressure proved to be effective as Sophie Pomeroy hammered in a goal early for Team Nova Scotia.

That would be the only goal Nova Scotia put up.

Nicole Crosthwaite hammered in a free hit from the point, tying things up at 1-1 before the end of the first.

Elise Van Thielen and Dana Isaacs each added goals to the score, making it a 3-1 game for Ontario.

Amy Field was huge for Team Nova Scotia, stopping 24 of 27 shots against her and earning player of the match honours.

Final: Ontario 3, Nova Scotia 1 (Series: Ontario 8, Nova Scotia 1)
Ontario MVP: Rylee Bourgaize
Nova Scotia MVP: Amy Field

The bronze medal match saw team Nova Scotia and Team Quebec go head-to-head.

Nova Scotia played an all-around dominant game, outshooting the Quebec squad 20-17.

The East Coast team didn’t allow Quebec to get on the board throughout the opening period while logging a pair of goals themselves.

Quebec found a goal early in the second, but Nova Scotia responded with two more to extend their lead to 4-1.

Three more goals went in favour of team Nova Scotia in the third, but Quebec still showed life, finding the net twice in the final moments of play.

Team Nova Scotia’s dominance earned them a bronze medal finish.

Final: Nova Scotia 7, Quebec 3
Nova Scotia MVP: Ryan Tam
Quebec: Guillaume Rivet
