Floorball Canada Wins Bid to Host World Floorball Championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia!
The 2019 Men’s U19 World Floorball Championships will take place in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
The International Floorball Federation (IFF) granted the opportunity to host the 2019 Men’s U19 World Floorball Championship (WFC) to Floorball Canada. Floorball Canada, working with Floorball Nova Scotia, will be hosting the tournament May 8-12, 2019. The event will include 16 teams from around the world.
Floorball Canada is building off of the momentum from the Women’s U19 WFC, which took place in May 2016 in Belleville, ON. The tournament set attendance records and was the largest floorball event to take place outside of Europe. “Floorball is really growing here in Canada. After Canada hosted the Women’s U19 WFC, the next logical step is to host the Men’s U19,” Anthony Mac Neil, Head of the Local Organizing Committee, commented. Floorball Canada plans to maintain the exceptional standard set in Belleville with the upcoming tournament, which will take place in one of Canada’s floorball hubs, Halifax.
“Halifax is the perfect city to host this tournament. It has a supportive community, government, public sector resources, and infrastructure required for events such as this,” Mac Neil explained. Floorball Nova Scotia, with the help of Premier Floorball, Sport Nova Scotia, Halifax Recreation, Schools Plus, Hockey Canada and a number of local minor hockey teams, has grown the sport in Nova Scotia and is now being played in a dozen schools and in multiple floorball clubs throughout Halifax.
Having another WFC hosted outside of Europe is important for the IFF and floorball in general. Floorball is being played in the upcoming World Games in 2017 in Poland and is poised to be a sport in the 2024 Olympics. With 65 countries now as members of the IFF, having a WFC outside of Europe will continue to help grow the sport globally
