Floorball
  • I was first introduced to floorball through my sons' Parkland Hockey Academy off ice program.  It was a large component of the off ice training. I volunteered to assist with the U19 Men's National team once my son had been selected in 2010.  I was the Equipment Manager for the team that travelled to the World Championships in Germany in the spring of 2011. I would like to pursue a role with the team again for 2013.
  • I currently am coaching alongside of Kevin Thibault as part of the Parkland Warriors Floorball Club in Spruce Grove, Alberta.  We currently have 60+ participants and look forward to many more joining.
  • I am also part of a very excited group that is looking to either join up with the existing Floorball Alberta board or rebuild as a new board.
  • I have travelled with my sons to the Canada Cup for the past 3 tournaments and thoroughly enjoy the sport, camaraderie, and look forward to it each year.
  • My goals in the future is to really promote floorball throughout Alberta, build on the club we have in Spruce Grove, and participate on the Floorball Canada board to assist in having Canada recognized as a strong and willing organization on the international level.

(2009-2012)
Floorball Experience
  • My 15 year old son saw a Youtube video and ordered two floorball sticks around Christmas.  When he brought the sticks to Newbridge Academy there was a flurry of requests from other kids of all ages for sticks and soon the school was offering Floorball Fridays as a weekly program.
  • The sport became addictive for other kids who picked up a stick and ball (even the non hockey players who attended the school) and after seeing the look and excitement on these kids faces it became clear that this sport could catch on and grow to reach other kids.
  • The school owner and I ran a few "drop in and learn" clinics and have had nothing but requests for more.  Our boys wanted to get more involved with the game (and potential business upside) that they convinced me to attend the Canada Cup at York University this May 2012.

Juha Mikkola - Ontario Representative

Picture
Juha Mikkola, known as "Mr.Floorball", may be the biggest promoter of floorball in North America. It's difficult to find a North American floorball event that does not somehow include this Finnish expatriate. After moving from Helsinki to Toronto in 2001, Juha has made it his mission to bring the unknown sport of floorball to Canadians and Americans across the continent.

Juha's love of the game has helped create the 18-team Toronto Floorball League and other floorball leagues and programs across Ontario. He has helped bring floorball to more than 300 high schools across the country and Juha continues to focus his efforts within the school system to help grow the sport at the grassroots level. As the founder of the Canada Cup in 2004, he has made what started as a small tournament of six teams into an international event hosting over 60 teams in 2012. Juha has also fostered connections between floorball and the ice hockey community, including becoming an Official Supplier to Hockey Canada and officially partnering with Minor Hockey organizations such as the Ontario Minor Hockey Association.

Juha is devoted to floorball full-time through his work at FloorballPro Inc., official importers of Salming floorball equipment and sponsors of Floorball Canada. He is also the principal of Grassroots Floorball Inc., organizers of Youth and Adult floorball programs and tournaments.
